Also have you checked your dash pot oil or the piston in the suction chamber might need cleaning. Another thing to check is the needle valve in the float chamber, it may be sticking or if you have a condenser ( points ignition ) it may need replacing . Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the advice.
I had a fiddle at the weekend fixing a few other things, and we went out for an hour, giving my daughter some driving practice and it was fine all that time. This morning, on the way in to work, about 15 miles into the journey, if started losing power, juddering and then cut out again. I kept trying to restart it, trying not to kill the battery, and eventually got it started. I drove home again to swap it for my wife's mini.
I do wonder if it is something to do with the replacement short hose I put in for the warm air feed to the air filter. It seem like it has the problem when it gets hot (my daughter drives quite slowly, so it doesn't get hot. I drive quickly and about 15 miles in, particularly when I come to a queue of traffic, it packs up. If I wait 5-10 minutes it seems to start, after panicing me that it will never start again). It makes me wonder if in some way the hot air supply is killing the air intake. That would produce the sort of symptoms I'm experiencing. I've taken the air filter box apart, and the bimetallic strip seems to work - cutting the hot air intake when it gets hot, but opening the cold air inlet. Obviously, all the foam on the paddle at the end of the bimetallic strip has rotted to dust, but apart from that it looks fine. I think I might try running without the replacement hose?
The only other thing that nags at the back of my mind is that I did knock a narrow hose off when I was doing the wiper park switch. I'm not sure what this pipe is intended to do? I saw it when I put the wiper motor back, and there was only one obvious place it could have come from, so I put it back. I've attached some pictures of the 2 ends in the engine compartment. The end nearest the wiper motor was hanging free, and there was a short plastic tube sticking out of the inner wing panel, so I just reconnected it. When I was working on it this weekend, it did the same again, but the short tube from the wing panel seemed to get pulled back out of sight. I managed to pull it back and fix it again. I do wonder because the outer hose pipe is pinched at the end, as if it has been clipped, but there is no clip there now. Also, I wonder if the inner pipe might not have just been pulled out - I wonder if it snapped off from inside the outer pipe. Finally, I wonder where the pipe goes after it has gone through the wing panel - and if it has come detached from whereever it goes.
